Jessica is a first grade teacher at Jackson Elementary, part of Selma Unified School District in Selma, CA. This is a school she is intimately familiar with because she attended there as a child and her principal, at that time, is the same person who hired her for her teaching position. She earned her AA degree at College of the Sequoias then transferred to CSU Fresno where she earned her multiple credential degree.
Staying close to family has allowed Jessica to enjoy weekly family visits as an adult. On Fridays and Saturdays she and her husband visit with her side of the family and Sundays are spent with her husband's family. Family events include pool games and barbeques. Fires are an important part of family life as her husband is a reserve fire fighter.
From an early age, Jessica knew she wanted to be a teacher. She had a chalkboard and table in her room where she pretended to teach her little nephew. This same nephew was her inspiration for becoming a teacher. His learning difficulties emerged in 4th grade and he did not get a diagnosis or help with his ADHD until the 6th grade. Jessica decided she wanted to become a teacher to help students like him. Now Jessica works with first grade students and is sensitive to their possible learning problems.
A fellow first grade teacher recommended the San Joaquin Valley Writing Project and she is enjoying her time here.
